Find a postal code by country, region and town

Use a guided path when you know the place but not the code. Choose a country, narrow to a state or province, search a village or town, and open the matching postal result.

Why a guided postal-code search is useful

A free-text search is quickest when you already know a postal code or an exact place name. A guided finder serves a different task: you know the country and perhaps the state, province or administrative area, but the spelling of the town is uncertain or several places share a similar name. The four-stage form reduces the amount of unrelated data shown at each step. It also makes the hierarchy visible, which is especially helpful when a country uses administrative terms that differ from the words used in your own address.

The labels are deliberately broad. โ€œState, province or regionโ€ represents the first administrative level supplied in the active GeoNames postal snapshot. Depending on the country, that field may describe a state, province, county, department, district, territory or another official area. โ€œVillage, town or localityโ€ searches the source place name attached to postal records. ZipCodeGlobe does not rename an area merely to make every country look the same.

How the four stages work

  1. Country: Select one of the countries that has active postal records. The list comes from the imported ISO country reference and the active snapshot statistics.
  2. Area: Choose a first-level region when the source provides one. Select โ€œAll areas / not suppliedโ€ when you are unsure or when GeoNames has no region for the relevant record.
  3. Town or village: Type at least two characters. The searchable dropdown returns bounded suggestions from the selected country and region rather than loading thousands of place names into the browser.
  4. Postal result: Select a code and open its result page. The result page lists every active source record sharing that country and code, instead of displaying one arbitrary place.

What the result doesโ€”and does notโ€”confirm

A postal-code match confirms that the selected code and place occur together in the active GeoNames-derived snapshot. It does not prove that a complete street address is deliverable, that a courier currently serves it, or that a national postal authority has not changed the code since the snapshot was checked. Address-line order and country format rules are maintained separately from the raw postal records because the GeoNames file does not provide those rules.

Some codes cover many villages, delivery offices or administrative descriptions. For that reason, the last step opens the normal postal-code result page rather than pretending that a dropdown row is the complete answer. You can review all matching place records, source dates, coordinates where available, nearby codes and the public correction route. This is more transparent than collapsing a shared code into one label.

Retention without a data trap

The finder is designed to encourage useful exploration, not to trap visitors in unnecessary clicks. Every stage narrows a real data dimension, the browser requests only bounded suggestions, and a direct search remains available throughout the site. The page works as a conventional GET form when JavaScript is unavailable; JavaScript only adds the cascading dropdown behaviour and live status messages.

Tips for better place matching

  • Begin with the official or commonly used spelling, but try a shorter prefix when accents or transliterations differ.
  • Choose the region first when the same town name exists in several areas.
  • Use โ€œAll areasโ€ when the source record lacks a first-level administrative value.
  • After opening a code, compare every listed place rather than relying only on the first row.

The finder uses the same active snapshot, raw-value preservation rules and multi-record postal model as the rest of ZipCodeGlobe. It does not call an external geocoding service, transmit an address to a third party, or infer a postal code that is absent from the source.
